CGHS Eligibility Verification & Pricing Integration for Lab Tests

Product: Tata 1mg App
Company: Tata 1mg
Author: Abhishek
Document Type: Product Feature Proposal

1. Overview

The lab test booking feature on the Tata 1mg App allows users to search diagnostic tests, compare labs, and schedule home sample collection.

However, users eligible for subsidized healthcare under the
Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) cannot apply CGHS pricing while booking tests online.

As a result, many eligible users:

  • abandon digital booking
  • visit offline diagnostic centers
  • avoid the platform due to higher visible pricing

This feature introduces CGHS eligibility verification and automated CGHS pricing within the booking flow.

2. Problem Statement

CGHS beneficiaries cannot access their subsidized pricing while booking lab tests digitally, leading to:

  • pricing-driven booking drop-offs
  • loss of bookings to offline labs
  • reduced adoption among government healthcare beneficiaries.

3. Goals & Objectives

Primary Goal

Enable CGHS beneficiaries to verify eligibility and access CGHS-compliant lab test pricing within the app.

Business Objectives

  • Increase lab test bookings among CGHS users
  • Improve booking conversion rates
  • Expand the diagnostic user base

User Objectives

  • Access subsidized diagnostic pricing
  • Avoid offline verification processes
  • Simplify lab test booking

4. Success Metrics

Since this is a proposed feature, the following metrics would be monitored after launch.

Primary Metric

Lab Test Booking Conversion Rate

Definition:
Percentage of users who complete booking after viewing test pricing.

Secondary Metrics

CGHS Verification Completion Rate
Users who successfully verify their CGHS ID.

Bookings from CGHS Users
Number of lab tests booked by verified CGHS users.

Checkout Completion Rate
Users who complete booking after applying CGHS pricing.

5. Target Users

Primary Users

CGHS Beneficiaries

Includes:

  • Central government employees
  • pensioners
  • dependents covered under CGHS

Characteristics:

  • high diagnostic test frequency
  • price-sensitive healthcare spending

Secondary Users

Senior citizens requiring frequent health monitoring and home sample collection.

6. User Stories

Eligibility Verification

As a CGHS beneficiary
I want to upload my CGHS ID
So that I can access CGHS pricing for lab tests.

Pricing Transparency

As a CGHS user
I want to see CGHS-approved pricing during booking
So that I can make affordable healthcare decisions.

Simplified Booking

As a user
I want the app to apply CGHS pricing automatically after verification
So that I can complete my booking quickly.

7. Product Requirements

1. CGHS Eligibility Toggle

Users should see an option during lab test booking:

“Do you have a CGHS card?”

Options:

  • Yes → proceed to verification
  • No → continue with standard pricing

2. CGHS ID Upload

Users must upload:

  • CGHS card image OR
  • CGHS ID number

Verification can occur through backend validation.

3. Eligibility Validation

The system verifies:

  • CGHS ID authenticity
  • active beneficiary status

If verified, CGHS pricing becomes available.

4. CGHS Pricing Display

Once verified:

  • Lab test pricing updates automatically
  • CGHS-approved rates are displayed

Example UI label:

“CGHS Price Applied”

5. Persistent User Status

After successful verification:

  • CGHS eligibility is saved in the user profile
  • users do not need to upload ID again.

8. User Flow

Lab Test Search

View Test Details

Select “Apply CGHS Pricing”

Upload CGHS ID

Eligibility Verification

CGHS Pricing Applied

Checkout

Booking Confirmation

9. Edge Cases

Invalid CGHS ID

User sees:

“Unable to verify CGHS eligibility. Please check your ID.”

Expired CGHS Card

User sees:

“Your CGHS eligibility could not be verified.”

Lab Not Supporting CGHS

User sees:

“CGHS pricing unavailable for this lab.”

10. Risks & Mitigations

Fraudulent Use of CGHS IDs

Mitigation:

  • backend validation
  • manual audit triggers

Verification Failures

Mitigation:

  • fallback support flow
  • manual verification option

Limited CGHS Lab Coverage

Mitigation:

  • display nearby CGHS-supported labs

11. Future Improvements

OCR-Based CGHS Card Recognition

Automatically extract CGHS details from uploaded card images.

Family CGHS Profiles

Allow users to add family members under one CGHS account.

CGHS Lab Discovery

Dedicated section:

“CGHS Eligible Diagnostic Tests”

12. Launch Plan

Phase 1

  • launch CGHS verification
  • enable CGHS pricing

Phase 2

  • expand to more labs
  • introduce OCR verification

Phase 3

  • family profile linking

Final Summary

Integrating CGHS eligibility verification into the lab test booking flow will allow the Tata 1mg App to reduce pricing friction, improve booking conversions, and expand accessibility for government healthcare beneficiaries.

This feature bridges the gap between government healthcare benefits and digital diagnostic platforms.

If you’d like, I can also help you create a much stronger portfolio presentation version of this PRD, because PM portfolios usually include a 1-page “Product Spec Snapshot” rather than a full PRD.
